Chairman’s Column
Dawson County Republican Party Forum a Success
By Clint Smith
Chairman, Dawson County Republican Party
On Tuesday, May 27, the Dawson County Republican Party held a forum for the candidates for the Board of Commissioner seats 2 and 4.
The candidates for District 2 are James Swafford and Terri Tragesser.
The candidates for District 4 are Julie Hughes Nix and Thayer Spencer.
The overflow audience heard the candidates share their views on balancing the growth in Dawson County with quality of life; ways to promote a good working relationship with the City of Dawsonville; the proposed new courthouse; and other budgetary issues.
“Our Republican candidates are well informed and prepared to lead,” Chairman Clint Smith said.
Public Service Commissioner Doug Everett discussed his first six years in office and his current re-election campaign. Everett and Clint Smith served together in the Georgia House of Representatives.
Chairman Smith presented Mary Bob Fox, member of the Board of Directors of the Dawson County Arts Council, with a financial contribution of $500 in appreciation of the Board’s hospitality in offering the Bowen Center for the Arts to the Dawson County GOP for its new meeting venue. The contribution also serves as a way for the Dawson County Republican Party to support local artists and programs.
Chairman Smith stressed the urgency of Republican activists to enthusiastically support Senator John McCain and his bid for the White House because the Democrat candidates are frightening choices. “The election in November is very, very important in determining the direction of our nation,” Smith said.
The next meeting of the Dawson County Republican Party will be held on Tuesday, June 17th at 7:00 pm at the Bowen Center for the Arts. The program will include a forum featuring the candidates for Chief Magistrate Judge and Probate Judge.
